You Do Not Need a Supervisor First
This is the rare funded PhD where cold-emailing a professor is not the gateway.
Most European PhD funding requires you to find a supervisor, secure their agreement and obtain a signed letter before you can even apply. EMBL works the other way round. You apply to the programme, EMBL faculty assess you, and the matching to a research group happens during the interview week.
If you have been stuck sending outreach emails that go unanswered, this is the application where that barrier does not exist. It also means your written application is doing all the work, since there is no supervisor advocating for you behind the scenes.
Do Not Upload Your CV
EMBL states that uploaded CVs, recommendation letters and certificates will be removed from your application and not considered.
Everything is assessed from the information you type into the online form fields. A CV attached as a PDF does not replace missing information in the form, and it will simply be deleted.
This catches out almost everyone applying from a background where a polished CV is the centrepiece. Budget real time for the form itself, because the form is the application.
Important: If you do upload documents, the limit is five files, 2 MB each, PDF only. You can amend your application after submitting, right up to the deadline, as long as you save and resubmit.
What Does It Pay?
EMBL publishes predoctoral rates by country. The figures below are from the fellowship rates sheet effective 1 July 2025, rounded to the nearest unit.
| Site | Country | First 9 months | From month 34 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heidelberg, Hamburg | Germany | €2,520 | €2,965 |
| Grenoble | France | €2,232 | €2,625 |
| EMBL-EBI Hinxton | UK | £2,071 | £2,436 |
| Barcelona | Spain | €2,014 | €2,370 |
| Rome | Italy | €1,976 | €2,324 |
The stipend rises in steps. It increases after you pass the Qualifying Assessment in the first nine months, again at month 22, and again at month 34.
- A one-off start-up payment is paid on arrival — roughly €4,448 in Germany, scaled by country
- Healthcare and pension are included. This is a fellowship with social benefits, not a bare stipend
- No tuition fees to EMBL
Important: These are the rates EMBL currently publishes, dated July 2025. Check the linked rates sheet for the version applying to your cohort, and remember the Italian rate is roughly 34% below the German one — the site you end up at materially changes what you earn.
Who Can Apply
- You must hold, or expect to receive before starting, a degree that formally qualifies you to enter a PhD in the country where you obtained it
- A minimum of two academic reference letters
- Applications are evaluated solely on qualification and scientific potential
EMBL is a DORA signatory, which in practice means the assessment looks at the substance of your work rather than the impact factors of the journals it appeared in.
Important: No English test is required, but EMBL notes that written and verbal proficiency in English is a prerequisite. Certificates need not be translated into English, though it helps if they already are.
Are Non-Biologists Welcome?
Yes, and EMBL actively recruits them.
Around 85% of current students have a biology background, which means roughly one in seven does not. EMBL states directly that it encourages candidates with backgrounds in chemistry, physics, mathematics, molecular medicine, computer science and engineering to apply and work alongside biologists.
If you trained in physics or maths and assumed a molecular biology lab was closed to you, this programme is one of the few that says otherwise in writing. There are currently around 250 PhD students from 48 nationalities in the programme.
Recruitment Timeline
- 1 September 2026 — applications opened
- 12 October 2026, 23:59 CET — application deadline. Late applications are not considered
- 14 October 2026, 23:59 CET — reference deadline
- Second half of October 2026 — written application results
- 27 October – 13 November 2026 — online screening interviews
- 1 December 2026 — Virtual Panel Assessment
- 25–29 January 2027 — in-person interviews at EMBL-EBI, Barcelona, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome
- 1–4 February 2027 — in-person interviews at Heidelberg
- By October 2027 — latest start date
Important: The reference deadline falls two days after the application deadline. You can submit without your referees having finished, and they can access the form afterwards. That buffer is deliberate, and it means a slow referee is not a reason to miss the 12 October cutoff.
The Reference Rules Are Strict
- References must come from institutional email accounts
- If your referee only has a Gmail or Hotmail address, they must not complete the online form. Instead they send a signed, stamped reference on institutional headed paper as a PDF to the Graduate Office, quoting your 8-digit application ID
- You can see whether references have been submitted, but not read them
- Getting references in on time is explicitly your responsibility
EMBL’s own advice is to complete the general info and references sections of the form first, so referees get the request early. Contact them before you enter their details, to check they are available and willing.
How the Selection Works
- Written application review by EMBL faculty. Group Leaders may contact you for an informal pre-screening interview. Not being contacted does not mean you are out
- Virtual Panel Assessment — a formal 30-minute panel interview with EMBL Group Leaders against defined criteria. No presentation is required at this stage
- In-person interview week at the site of the Group Leaders who invited you. One-on-one interviews plus time with group members and current students. EMBL recommends having a short presentation ready here
- Results communicated shortly after the interview week. Afterwards you submit your preferences for which group you want to join
Important: Recruiting Group Leaders select up to two candidates per open position for the on-site week, so reaching that stage means real odds rather than a long shot. The in-person week does require travel to Europe in January or February 2027, which matters for anyone who will need a visa appointment over the holiday period.
What Happens If You Are Not Selected?
Opt in to the Shared Applicant Pool.
Applicants who opt in during the application and are not admitted have their profiles made available to external Principal Investigators and Group Leaders looking for PhD candidates for their own groups.
Access is restricted to researchers leading independent groups, with a current institutional affiliation, applying from an official institutional email. The pool refreshes after each recruitment round, typically in December and May.
It costs nothing to tick, and a strong application that narrowly missed EMBL is exactly the profile other labs are looking for. Do not skip past that checkbox.
Honest Notes Before You Apply
Priority goes to member state applicants. EMBL welcomes all nationalities, but states that as a general rule priority is given to member state applicants where candidates are equally qualified. Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Bangladesh are not EMBL member states, so the written application has to be strong enough that the comparison is not close.
Your own funding does not secure a place. Candidates with external funding still go through the full evaluation and must pass the interview procedure.
You can reapply. Candidates not invited onward are welcome to apply in a future round, though the online form has to be filled in again from scratch.
EMBL never charges a fee or asks for bank details at any stage — application, interviews, processing or training. Any message claiming otherwise is a scam.
