EMBO funds life scientists to do a two-year postdoc in a country other than the one where they did their PhD, covering salary, relocation and childcare. Applications are accepted all year, but the next hard cutoff is Friday 22 January 2027 at 14:00 CET.
That date carries more weight than a normal deadline this year, for a reason covered below.

Why This Particular Deadline Matters
22 January 2027 at 14:00 CET is the last moment you will ever be able to re-apply to EMBO.
Under the current rules, a rejected applicant may re-apply once. EMBO has confirmed that from the Autumn 2027 selection round, meaning every application submitted after 22 January 2027 at 14:00 CET, re-applications are no longer permitted. Researchers will be allowed one EMBO Fellowship proposal, ever.
The practical effect is straightforward. Apply on or before that cutoff and a rejection still leaves you a second attempt. Apply a day later and your single attempt is spent.
If your application would be stronger in July than in January, that trade-off is now a real decision rather than an obvious one. A rushed January application that preserves a second attempt may be worth more than a polished July application that uses up your only one.
Important: A second rule already took effect. Since the Autumn 2026 round, a host laboratory may support only one candidate per selection round. If two people apply to the same lab, EMBO asks the lab to withdraw the extra applications. Ask your prospective host directly whether anyone else is applying to them in the same round, before you write anything.
Who Can Apply
- You must hold a doctorate or equivalent by the start of the fellowship
- If you already hold a PhD when you apply, it must have been awarded in the two years before your submission date
- At least one first-author research paper published or accepted in an international peer-reviewed journal
- A first-author preprint counts only if it carries public in-depth peer reviews obtained from an independent peer review service. Informal comments, highlights and individual reviews posted online do not count
Important: The two-year window is measured from the date of submission, not the deadline. It is the criterion that quietly disqualifies more applicants than any other, because postdocs who spent a year settling into a position often discover they have already aged out.
Where You Cannot Go
The mobility rules are stricter than most fellowship schemes, and each one is a hard exclusion rather than a preference. Your application will not be considered if:
- The host country is the country where you obtained your PhD
- The host lab is one where you previously worked for more than six months, whether in one visit or several
- The host is the lab, institute or department where you did your PhD
- The host supervisor is your PhD supervisor, regardless of where they are now based
- You have already been living in the host country for six months or more at the time you submit
- The project is a direct continuation of your PhD work
That last one deserves attention. A proposal that reads as chapter four of your thesis will fail on eligibility rather than on quality. The project needs to be a genuine change of direction that your PhD equipped you for, not an extension of it.
You may also submit only one application, for one project, at one host laboratory per round.
What Does EMBO Provide?
- Two years of salary or stipend — the rate depends on the host country
- Travel and relocation allowance, paid as a lump sum, ideally before the fellowship starts
- Child daycare allowance — up to €2,500 per fellowship year per child under six, for fellows outside EMBC Member States
- Dependent child allowance for children under 18, for fellows outside EMBC Member States, at a rate that varies by country
- Paid parental leave and a matching fellowship extension
- Part-time working at 50% or 75%, with total duration capped at 36 months
- A free place on an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course, subject to availability
- Membership of the EMBO Fellows’ Network and invitation to the Fellows’ Meeting
Important: How the money reaches you depends on where you go. In EMBC Member States, EMBO pays the host institution, which then issues you an employment contract covering net salary, social contributions and taxes. Outside those states, you receive a stipend instead, which may be taxable. The employment contract route usually means pension rights and access to the host country’s welfare system, so it is worth understanding which one applies to your target country before you choose it.

Is It Fully Funded?
For you, yes. For your research, no.
The fellowship covers your salary or stipend, relocation and family support. It explicitly does not cover bench fees, overheads, consumables, or any funding for your host supervisor or institute.
This changes the conversation you have with a prospective host. You are not bringing project money, you are bringing yourself fully paid for two years. Some labs value that enormously. Labs that need consumables covered will say no, and it is better to learn that in the first email than the fifth.
Do You Need a Host Lab Before Applying?
Yes, and your application cannot be completed without a written acceptance from the receiving institute.
EMBO states plainly that finding a host is the applicant’s responsibility and that it will not help you find one. You need a supervisor who has agreed to take you, an institute that has signed an acceptance, and two referees, before the application counts as submitted.
With a January deadline, the outreach needs to be underway now. A cold email in September has time to become a conversation, a research discussion and a signed acceptance letter. The same email in December arrives too late to produce paperwork.
When Are the Deadlines?
Applications are accepted year-round and fall into one of two evaluation rounds depending on when you confirm completion.
- Spring evaluation — applications completed by the fourth Friday of January, 14:00 CET. Results announced around mid-June
- Autumn evaluation — applications completed by the second Friday of July, 14:00 CEST. Results announced around mid-December
For this cycle, the Spring 2027 cutoff is Friday 22 January 2027 at 14:00 CET.
Important: The deadline is 14:00, not midnight. Applications completed after 14:00 CET on the day roll into the next round with no exceptions. Registering an account does not enter you into a round either — the application only counts once every required item is in and you have confirmed completion. That confirmation timestamp is the reference date for both eligibility and evaluation.
From Milan, Paris or Berlin that is 14:00 local. It is 18:00 in Pakistan, 18:30 in India, 14:00 in Nigeria and 19:00 in Bangladesh during CET. Fellowships must start within one calendar year of the evaluation cut-off.

- An acceptance letter from the receiving institute
All three go through the online system. An application missing any of them is incomplete, and incomplete applications are not evaluated.
What Counts as an Exception?
Parental leave, severe illness and military service.
EMBO considers exceptions to the eligibility rules on a case-by-case basis for those circumstances, and time spent on an official career break is not counted toward the two-year post-PhD limit. Voluntary career breaks do not qualify.
The process matters as much as the grounds. You must contact the Fellowship Office before submitting. An application that falls outside the criteria without prior approval is ruled ineligible, whatever the reason behind it.
