Can You Apply for a Master’s in a Different Field?

I get this message quite often: “I have a BS in Zoology. I have been searching for months and there is almost nothing funded in my field.”

The funding is usually there. The problem is that the words on your degree certificate do not match the words universities use to name their master’s programmes. These two sets of words are rarely the same, and many good applicants give up somewhere in that gap.

Your degree is usually not the problem

Two situations come up again and again.

The first is a four-year bachelor’s degree, which is the normal BS in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria and many other countries. Most European master’s programmes ask for a bachelor’s degree worth at least 180 ECTS, which means three years of full-time study. A four-year degree passes this easily. Some competitive programmes prefer 210 or 240 ECTS, and a four-year degree helps there too.

The second is the older system, where you do a BSc for two years and then an MSc for two more years. This one confuses people, because the certificate says “master’s” but the total is sixteen years of education. Universities abroad usually treat it as a bachelor’s-level degree. That sounds like bad news, but it is not. DAAD’s own guidance for Pakistani students lists MSc, MA, BEng and BS Honours together as the sixteen-year qualification that makes you eligible for a master’s in Germany. So the old route and the new BS route both work.

The sixteen-year degree does cause a problem in one place: applying directly to a PhD. Many European universities want around 300 ECTS in total before you start a doctorate. Some say clearly that students with less than this may not be able to do a PhD anywhere in Europe. Doing a master’s abroad solves this completely, which is one more reason to take the master’s route seriously instead of seeing it as a delay.

The paperwork that surprises people

This part is not optional, and it takes longer than most people expect. If you are applying to Germany from Pakistan, India, China or Vietnam, you need an APS certificate. This is an academic check done through the German embassy. Students from Pakistan also need HEC attestation on their degrees and transcripts. German universities also check your university in a database called anabin, so it is worth confirming that your university is listed there before you build your whole plan around one country.

Other countries have similar systems. None of this stops you from applying. But all of it takes weeks, so it belongs at the beginning of your timeline, not the end.

Programmes are named after problems, not after your degree

This is the part that changes your whole search.

Nobody names a master’s programme “Zoology Scholarship.” Departments name their programmes after the questions they are trying to answer. Those names come from research funding, not from the subjects you studied in your bachelor’s.

The Erasmus Mundus catalogue shows this clearly. It has more than two hundred funded programmes, and its own subject filter has only about nineteen categories: Agro, Art, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, Education, Environmental and Geosciences, Geo, History, Information Science and Engineering, Information Technology, Med, Law, Life Sciences, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Your degree title is not on that list. Neither is anyone else’s. The system uses very broad areas and very specific problems, with nothing in the middle.

Here are some real programme names from that catalogue: Insects as Solutions for a Sustainable Future. Renewable Energy in the Marine Environment. Data Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. Bio and Pharmaceutical Materials Science. Sustainable Catalysis. Renewable Energy and Sustainable Construction.

A zoology graduate would be a good candidate for the first one. But they would never find it by searching the word “zoology.”

Where a zoology or biology degree can take you

These are the words worth searching: conservation biology, wildlife management, biodiversity, ecology and evolution, animal behaviour, marine biology, environmental science, environmental management, natural resource management, One Health, veterinary public health, epidemiology, molecular ecology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, fisheries science, and sustainable food systems.

All of these are active areas with funded programmes. What they share is simple: none of them is called zoology.

Where a mathematics degree can take you

Data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, biostatistics, actuarial science, mathematical physics, computational mechanics, scientific computing, quantitative finance, financial mathematics, cryptography, cybersecurity, operations research, supply chain analytics, computational biology, epidemiological modelling, and climate modelling.

Mathematics is probably the most flexible bachelor’s degree there is. Your problem will not be finding programmes that accept you. Your problem will be choosing between them.

Where an environmental science degree can take you

This one is a little different, because environmental science already covers many subjects. Your options are not narrow. The difficulty is that the degree covers so much that no single next step feels obvious.

The words to search here are: climate change science, climate adaptation, atmospheric science, air quality, water resources management, hydrology, renewable energy systems, GIS and remote sensing, geoinformatics, earth observation, environmental data science, environmental policy, environmental governance, sustainable development, disaster risk management, urban planning, environmental planning, soil science, agroecology, food security, waste management, circular economy, industrial ecology, life cycle assessment, environmental health, ecotoxicology, environmental economics, corporate sustainability, marine and coastal management, and forestry.

Which of these you can reach depends less on your degree title and more on what you studied in your final two years. If your degree had a lot of chemistry and lab work, environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology and pollution control are natural next steps. If it had a lot of fieldwork, conservation, forestry and natural resource management fit better. If it included real statistics, modelling or GIS, then the data and climate modelling side opens up, and that is where a lot of the funding is at the moment.

One warning for this route. Environmental engineering programmes are not all the same, and you cannot tell the difference from the programme name. DTU in Denmark asks for a bachelor’s degree in engineering, plus at least 80 ECTS in specific subject groups. The University of Southern Denmark accepts any relevant bachelor’s degree in engineering or science, and decides case by case. At other universities you may be accepted but asked to take extra courses first, in subjects like fluid mechanics or soil mechanics. All of this is written on the entry requirements page, so it is worth reading carefully instead of guessing either way.

A few other degrees

  • Physics leads to materials science, photonics, medical physics, renewable energy, geophysics, semiconductor technology, and most of the quantitative fields listed above.
  • Chemistry leads to materials science, pharmaceutical sciences, environmental chemistry, food science, and catalysis.
  • Civil engineering leads to water resources, urban planning, disaster risk management, transport, and environmental engineering.
  • Economics and social sciences lead to public policy, development studies, environmental economics, and data analytics.

How far can you move?

It helps to think about distance, rather than asking whether a change is allowed or not.

A short move is one where the admissions committee needs no explanation from you. Zoology to conservation biology. Mathematics to statistics. Environmental science to water resources management. Chemistry to materials science. They can see the connection on your transcript, so you can use your statement to talk about your research interest instead of defending your background.

A longer move is one where the committee needs one or two sentences from you to understand your thinking. Zoology to environmental data science. Mathematics to computational neuroscience. Environmental science to corporate sustainability. Physics to quantitative finance. These work often, but only when your application explains the connection. Nobody will work it out for you.

A move that usually does not work is one where you are missing a long chain of courses that must be taken in order, or where the profession has legal rules about who can enter it.

The changes that usually do not work

I want to be direct about this part, because hoping for the best costs you application fees.

Zoology to pure mathematics is not realistic. A theoretical mathematics master’s assumes you have already studied real analysis, abstract algebra and topology. Those courses are built on each other over three or four semesters, and no proposal can replace them.

A humanities degree to chemical engineering has the same problem from the other direction. Thermodynamics, transport phenomena and reaction engineering are all built on physics and calculus, and that base takes years to build.

Environmental science to structural or chemical engineering is difficult for the same reason. This is why some environmental engineering programmes ask specifically for an engineering bachelor’s. The design and analysis courses assume you have taken a mechanics and mathematics sequence in order.

Mathematics or physics to medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, law or clinical psychology is blocked by licensing rules, not by your knowledge. These professions have their own entry routes, and a master’s scholarship is not one of them.

A theory-only background to a lab-based molecular biology master’s is possible but hard, because the programme assumes you can already work in a lab. Some universities solve this with a bridging year or a pre-master’s year, so it is worth asking them directly.

The pattern is always the same. The real blocks are long course sequences and legal rules. Everything else can be discussed, if your application does its job.

What you actually carry with you

When a committee looks at someone changing fields, they are not really looking at your subject. They are looking at your methods.

Someone who counted bird populations for a thesis has done survey design, field data collection and statistics. Those three things matter far more to an environmental data science programme than the word “zoology” does. Someone who has written mathematical proofs has done structured logical thinking, and that is exactly what a machine learning programme wants underneath the coding.

Statistics, programming, lab technique, fieldwork, GIS, modelling, instruments, survey design, technical writing, languages, and working with messy real data. All of these travel with you almost anywhere. Only your subject knowledge stays behind, and that is usually the smaller part.

Your proposal decides whether the change works

If you are moving even one step sideways, your statement of purpose or research proposal has to close that gap. Three things do most of the work.

Show the overlap with something specific. Not “I have always been passionate about data,” but a course you took, a chapter of your thesis, a dataset you worked with, a technique you learned. Committees believe transcripts and specific details.

Explain what the new field gives you that your own field cannot. This is the sentence that shows you are moving towards something, not running away from something.

Show that you have already started to fill the obvious gap. An online Python course you finished, a small project using public data, a certificate, a summer placement. It does not have to be impressive. It has to exist.

Here is roughly how that sounds for a zoology graduate applying to environmental data science:

“My undergraduate thesis tracked seasonal changes in a frog population across three wetland sites. That meant two years of survey design, field sampling and statistical analysis in R. That work showed me that the hardest part of conservation is rarely the ecology. It is working with incomplete and uneven monitoring data at a large scale. Since then I have completed a course in spatial data analysis and rebuilt my thesis dataset as a small GIS project. I am applying to this programme so I can develop that side properly, instead of continuing to work around it.”

There is no apology for the background here, and no begging. It sounds like someone who knows exactly why they are moving.

Search by method, not by degree title

The practical solution is to stop searching for your subject, and start searching for the problem you want to work on or the method you want to learn.

Instead of “zoology scholarship,” try “MSc wildlife population modelling funded” or “master’s biodiversity monitoring scholarship Europe.” Instead of “mathematics scholarship,” try “MSc statistical learning funded” or “master’s computational modelling scholarship.” Instead of “environmental science scholarship,” try “MSc climate adaptation funded” or “master’s remote sensing scholarship Europe.”

A few places worth going through properly:

  • The Erasmus Mundus catalogue, which you can filter by keyword, country, field and duration. Use the keyword search rather than the field filter, because the field categories are broad enough to hide good programmes.
  • DAAD’s International Programmes in Germany database, which searches programmes by subject and language. This is the better place to start when you are still deciding what to apply for.
  • The DAAD scholarship database, once you know the programme and want to find the funding attached to it.
  • EURAXESS, which is better for research positions than for taught master’s, but useful for seeing which departments have active funding.

When you open a programme page, the entry requirements line matters more than anything else on that page. Phrases like “a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline” or “in a relevant field, or equivalent experience” are written loosely on purpose. They are a door, not a closed rule.

The email that saves you three months

If a programme looks close but you cannot tell whether your degree counts, the fastest thing you can do is email the programme coordinator. A short message with your degree title, your main relevant courses, and one line about what you want to study will usually get you an answer within a week.

The answer is often more generous than the website suggests. Sometimes they even suggest a programme in the same faculty that fits you better. Either way it takes a few minutes, and it removes a question you would otherwise spend weeks worrying about.

The part worth remembering

Your bachelor’s degree decided where you started. It did not decide where you go.

Almost nobody in research works on exactly what their bachelor’s certificate says. Admissions committees know this better than anyone, because most of them changed fields at some point too. What they want to see is that your change is a real decision, that you know what you are missing, and that you have already started doing something about it.

Very few doors are truly closed, and the ones that are closed have clear reasons you can find out in an afternoon. Everything else depends on how well you explain the connection.
